The silver kitchen caddy and green outdoor bin.
The council provides every household with two bins for food waste.
1. Small kitchen caddy (5 litre size) for cooked and uncooked food scraps. It stays indoors.
2. A green bin (23 litre size) to put out for collection every week. You can empty your kitchen caddy food waste into your outdoor bin at any time.
If you live in a building with a communal bin store, the store will contain a 140 litre large shared food bin which will be collected every week.

Why do we collect food waste?
Food waste collection is becoming mandatory for all councils from 2026. Based on trials with over 5,000 households, the system was a success with the vast majority of households responding positively.
Our trials have showed that up to 40% of general waste is food waste, which could be used as biofuel. So you’re helping to support a greener, cleaner, Mid Sussex.
Useful tips to keep your food waste bin clean.
- Make sure the bin clicks closed to stop the contents falling out if it is knocked over.
- You can use newspaper to line the bin, or use compostable liners to make it easier to empty and clean your bin.
- Rinse the bin with hot water when it is emptied.
- Keep the bin out of direct sunshine.
- Use washing up liquid, lemon juice or white vinegar to keep your bin clean and fresh.
