A Demolition Notice must be submitted for any demolition work with the following exceptions:

  • If you are complying with a demolition order made under the Housing Act 1957
  • For internal work in occupied buildings
  • For small buildings with a volume of less than 1750 cubic feet
  • Greenhouses, conservatories, sheds or prefabricated garages attached to a larger building
  • Agricultural buildings

The Demolition Notice must be submitted a minimum of 6 weeks prior to any demolition work being carried out.

The Demolition Notice must be submitted a minimum of 6 weeks prior to any demolition work being carried out.

You must also provide a copy of this notice to:

  • Occupiers of adjacent buildings
  • The public gas supplier
  • The public electricity supplier

What happens after I submit a notice?

Should we require any further information, we will contact you to advise.

Once the Demolition Notice has been submitted, we will respond within 6 weeks with a Section 81 counter notice confirming acceptance.

A copy of this notice will also be issued to owners/occupiers of adjacent buildings, gas supplier and West Sussex Fire and Rescue where appropriate.

Planning

You may also need to notify the Planning Department of your intended demolition if it was not included as part of a permitted Planning application.
