Promoting Kindness
At Mid Sussex District Council, we believe that kindness and respect are important foundations to enable our community to thrive. Every day, our staff work hard to deliver essential services, from housing and benefits to customer support and traffic management. Just like you, they have families, friends, and lives outside of work. We’re asking everyone in Mid Sussex to treat our staff and each other with the same kindness and respect as you would like to be treated.
On this page, you can find information about how we’re fostering a safe and inclusive environment in Mid Sussex.
Respectful dialogue: We recognise that everyone has the right to express their views and concerns. Please use appropriate and respectful language.
Constructive feedback: We value input that helps us improve our services as a Council.
Kindness in action: Whether it’s a smile, a thank-you, or a moment of patience – these small acts can make a big difference.
Support for our staff: Recognising the hard work of Council employees helps build a more compassionate and supportive community.
To ensure a safe and respectful environment for all, we will not tolerate:
Harassment or bullying: Verbal or physical abuse, intimidation, or threats directed at staff or other members of the public.
Discrimination: Any behaviour that targets individuals based on race, gender, disability, religion, or other protected characteristics.
Anti-social behaviour: Aggressive, disruptive, or inappropriate conduct in person or online. Find out more about how we manage anti-social behaviour in Mid Sussex.
Abusive language or gestures: Including shouting, swearing, or offensive remarks.
We take abusive behaviour seriously and are committed to protecting the wellbeing of our staff and the public. Here's how we respond:
Reporting: Staff and members of the public are encouraged to report abusive behaviour. Reports can be made in person, via phone, or email.
Investigation: All reports are reviewed and investigated in line with Council policies and relevant UK legislation.
Action: Each situation is assessed individually and actions will vary. Actions may include warnings, referrals to support services, mediation or conflict resolution, or in some cases escalation to enforcement authorities.
