Certain industrial processes and activities which have the potential to cause pollution are required to have an Environmental permit to operate.
The Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2016 were made under the Pollution Prevention and Control Act 1999 and prescribe those processes and activities which require a permit. There are three categories of permits under the Regulations:

Part A1 permits

These are regulated by the Environment Agency and cover industries that are considered to be the most polluting. Industries such as large scale power stations, chemical works and pharmaceutical production fall under this category. A1 premises are regulated for emissions to air, land, water and other environmental considerations such as noise, vibrations, waste and energy usage. Part A2 permits

This category is regulated by the Council and cover emissions to air, land and the water environment as well as other environmental considerations. Examples are brick manufacturers and timber treatment processes.

Part B permits

Seen to be lesser polluting, these industries are only regulated for emissions to air. Industries such as cement batching plants, coating material manufacture, petrol service stations, dry cleaners and vehicle refinishers will fall into this category.
