Climate & Sustainability Action

Making the world a more sustainable place is the responsibility of council, community, and every one of us. The goods we buy and throw away, how we travel and how we use energy at our homes and place of work has been causing harmful climate change. This is causing the loss of our natural environment at an unsustainable rate.

Taking action

The council is committed to play its part in supporting international and national plans to allow prosperity to continue but to move away from old and polluting ways of doing things.

Here are some key actions the council is taking forward:

  • Our future plans and policies the council has chosen to use the UN Sustainable Development Goals to guide our thinking and reporting on wider measures of social, environmental and economic wellbeing.
  • In June 2021 the council commissioned climate change experts to advise how to create an effective pathway to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in line with the government’s 2050 net-zero target.
  • Guided by the recommendations of the Net Zero report the council is updating its policy approach to environmental sustainability though the development of the Sustainable Economy Strategy and the review of the Local Plan during 2021-22.
  • The Council's Sustainable Economy Strategy and Action Plan 2022-2025 can be viewed here.
