Health and safety matters also apply to others who could be affected by work activities such as members of the public, visitors and contractors.

Who enforces the health and safety rules?
Responsibility for the enforcement of health and safety legislation in workplaces is divided between Mid Sussex District Council and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) - depending upon the type of business.
The Health and Safety Executive is responsible for businesses such as factories, building sites, farms and schools.
What we do
The Council carries out enforcement duties under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.
These cover a range of commercial premises including:

- Some warehouses
- Most offices
- Hotels
- Catering
- Sports
- Leisure
- Consumer services

We check on businesses to make sure they are complying with the law.
