What is a Hackney Carriage Tariff Card?

A Hackney Carriage Tariff Card is an official document issued by a local council that outlines the maximum fares that licensed Hackney Carriage (taxi) drivers are legally allowed to charge passengers for journeys within the district. 

What Does the Tariff Card Include? 

The tariff card typically includes: 

• Starting fare (also known as the "flag fall")
• Distance-based charges (e.g. per mile or per 1/10 mile)
• Time-based charges (e.g. waiting time or slow traffic)
• Extra charges such as:
• Late-night or bank holiday rates
• Additional passengers
• Soiling or cleaning fees (if applicable) 

Where Is the Tariff Card Displayed? 

By law, the tariff card must be: 

• Clearly displayed inside the vehicle, usually in the passenger area, so you can see the maximum fare structure before and during your journey.
• Followed by all Hackney Carriage drivers — they cannot charge more than the rates shown, though they may charge less at their discretion.
