Mid Sussex steps up action to protect Blue Badge scheme during Awareness Week
- 15/05/2026
Mid Sussex District Council has confiscated or retained more than 30 Blue Badges being used illegally since the start of the year, as part of proactive efforts to protect the scheme for genuine badge holders.
The Council is marking Blue Badge Awareness Week (11 to 15 May) by highlighting the work of its Parking Team to protect and support those who rely on it. Blue Badges play a vital role in helping people with disabilities and long-term health conditions maintain independence, enabling them to park closer to essential services and amenities. The Council is using this national awareness week to emphasise the importance of safeguarding the scheme for genuine users.
The Council has increased its enforcement activity, working closely with Sussex Police through joint operations. Since the start of the year, more than 30 Blue Badges have been retained or confiscated after being found to be used illegally. These cases included counterfeit badges, badges reported as stolen, and those still in use despite the original holder having passed away. This misuse not only undermines the scheme but also makes it harder for genuine badge holders to find accessible parking.
Alongside enforcement, the Parking Team has undertaken additional specialist training to strengthen officers’ expertise in both identifying misuse and improving public understanding of the scheme. This includes explaining that not all disabilities are visible, helping to challenge misconceptions, and promote greater awareness within local communities. Feedback from residents has been overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing their support for the Council’s efforts to protect the Blue Badge scheme.
Cllr Chris Hobbs, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Customer Services, said: “The Blue Badge scheme is a daily necessity for many residents, and it is essential that it is protected. Through a combination of enforcement, training and engagement with the community, the Council is working to ensure the scheme continues to support those it is intended for.”
