Local Government Reform: West Sussex Decision paused pending Government Review

Yesterday (Monday 7 September 2026) the Government has announced that it is pausing the LGR programme whilst it reviews if decisions already taken and those to be made are the right ones. No timeline has been given to local authorities as to when the review is to be carried out or when it will be concluded.

West Sussex councils have reacted to the latest development with disappointment that a process that has been ongoing for over 18 months has yet to be decided upon.

Commenting on the Government’s decision, Cllr Robert Eggleston, Leader of Mid Sussex District Council, said:  “We are disappointed and frustrated that the Government has paused the decision on the future of local government in West Sussex. After more than 18 months of work, this prolongs the uncertainty for our residents, communities, businesses, staff, and councillors.

“In the coming days, we will be seeking further information to understand the reasons for the pause and, importantly, the timetable for reaching a final decision. We urge the Government to provide clarity as soon as possible so that everyone affected can understand what happens next.

“In the meantime, we continue to remain firmly focused on delivering the services our residents rely on every day. We will also ensure our staff, members, residents, communities, and businesses are kept informed as the situation develops.”
