"Working together for a better future"
Simply put, a sustainable community is one which works to ensure a better quality of life for everyone, now and for generations to come.
To do this, we must make effective use of natural resources, enhance and protect the environment, promote inclusion and strengthen economic prosperity while offering services and infrastructure which are of a high quality, safe and accessible.
The Sustainable Communities Strategy, for Mid Sussex, sets out the agreed priorities of the agencies, organisations and communities of Mid Sussex for the next 10 years, under the guidance of the Mid Sussex Partnership.
It is called "Sustainable" to give greater emphasis to the economic, social and environmental issues that need to be taken into account when we consider how to ensure a vibrant, long-term future for Mid Sussex.
Consultation - where the council asks the public, service users and other relevant bodies about their plans.
A draft Sustainable Communities Strategy was produced in the summer of 2008 based on data about the District, consultation with officers, Members and wider partners. This built on the previous Community Strategy and was used for an extensive public consultation exercise that commenced in June 2008.
This draft, with a response form, was publicised on the Mid Sussex District Council website and was put on display in libraries, police stations, help points, town. parish, district & county council offices. Electronic copies were circulated to all members of the Mid Sussex Partnership.
A series of road-show events were held around the District giving members of the public a chance to comment on the document. Over 500 responses were obtained with the overwhelming majority providing support for the 4 key themes:
- Protecting and Enhancing the Environment
- Economic Vitality
- Cohesive and Safe Communities
- Healthy Lifestyles.
The results of this consultation were presented to the Mid Sussex Partnership's conference in September 2008 where agreement was reached on the changes required to the draft.
Throughout this process, every effort has been made to ensure that the Mid Sussex Sustainable Communities Strategy aligns with the Countywide Strategy - the West Sussex Sustainable Communities Strategy (agreed in the Autumn of 2008) and the targets in the West Sussex Local Area Agreement 2008-2011.
