Public Health Funerals
What is a public health funeral?
It is when a person dies and no one makes arrangements for a funeral. The Local Authority is under a legal obligation to make such arrangements.
If this happens – we will search the deceased’s home for:
- A will
- Evidence of any relatives
- Religious beliefs
- Funeral preferences
We will then:
- Register the death
- Arrange an appropriate funeral
We will make arrangements with a nominated funeral director for a cremation service at Woodvale Crematorium.
The cremated remains of the deceased will be scattered in the gardens of remembrance unless specific written instructions are found amongst the deceased possessions or in a will.
What happens to the person’s property and personal effects?
We will recover costs to meet funeral expenses from the deceased’s estate.
In cases where the deceased has died but has no next of kin – the matter will be referred to the Governments Solicitors – Bona Vacantia division of the Treasury Solicitors.
