Employers are required to take reasonable steps to protect their workers regarding their safety, health and welfare.

Health and safety matters also apply to others who could be affected by work activities such as members of the public, visitors and contractors.

Health and safety legislation applies to everyone at work. This includes:

  • Employers
  • Employees
  • The self-employed

Who enforces the health and safety rules?

Responsibility for the enforcement of health and safety legislation in workplaces is divided between Mid Sussex District Council and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) - depending upon the type of business.

The Health and Safety Executive is responsible for businesses such as factories, building sites, farms and schools.

What we do

The Council carries out enforcement duties under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.

These cover a range of commercial premises including:

  • Retailing
  • Some warehouses
  • Most offices
  • Hotels
  • Catering
  • Sports
  • Leisure
  • Consumer services
  • Places of worship

We check on businesses to make sure they are complying with the law.

We also:

  • Provide advice, education and training for owners of premises and their staff and people setting up in business for the first time
  • Investigate accidents at work
  • Investigate complaints about working condition
