Older people join together for Silver Sunday celebrations
PR2072/MF/SH - 20/10/2016
Mid Sussex District Council and Sir Nicholas Soames MP invited more than 80 older people from around the District to a Musical Afternoon Tea on Sunday 16 October 2016.
Hosted at Clair Hall in Haywards Heath, the event was part of the annual Silver Sunday celebrations, a day of fun and free activities for older people across the UK.
Sir Nicholas and his guests were joined by Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne and representatives from Mid Sussex District Council, Haywards Heath Town Council, East Grinstead Town Council and West Sussex Fire and Rescue.
Entertainment was provided by singer Tania Rodd, a West End vocalist who has appeared in major hit musicals such as Return to the Forbidden Planet, Buddy, Les Miserables, Godspell and The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Tania was joined by Marco Seymour, a talented magician who performed close-up tricks for the guests at their tables and captivated the audience with his unique blend of magic and comedy.
“Silver Sunday celebrates the value and knowledge older people contribute to our communities,” said Councillor Norman Webster, Cabinet Member for Community.
“Here in Mid Sussex we have a growing population of older people and we are always keen to recognise the tremendously important contribution they make.
“A recent survey found that more than a third of people aged over 75 said they were lonely, which is a heart-breaking statistic. We wanted our Musical Afternoon tea to give older people the opportunity to join together, meet their neighbours and make connections that will help them to overcome that loneliness.
“It was fantastic to see so many local people enjoying themselves at the event and the feedback I have received has been extremely positive. I would like to thank all the volunteers who gave up their time to make this all possible and our sponsors for their financial support.
“I hope that we can build on the popularity of this Musical Afternoon Tea to deliver many more successful Silver Sunday events in years to come.”
