New playground equipment for Burgess Hill and Turners Hill

Mid Sussex District Council has installed new playground equipment at St Andrews play area in Burgess Hill and the Recreation Ground at Turners Hill to give local children and their families a more enjoyable way to play.

In St Andrews play area, Burgess Hill, there’s a new 2.4-metre-tall climbing frame that features a fireman’s pole, monkey bars, rope netting and a slide. For younger children there’s a mini playhouse with toddler slide and a spinning bowl.

The playground has been designed to be more open, so there is less opportunity for anti-social behaviour and the new equipment is made of steel, providing greater protection against vandalism.

New seating has been provided for parents and there are four different types of swing seat, including an upright swing that offers greater support for children with limited core strength and a swing that provides the option to sit face to face. All the new equipment is linked by a new, softer, rubber surface.

In Turners Hill, the old metal climbing frame has been replaced by a new timber unit that offers children a variety of ways to climb up or slide down. To improve accessibility, there’s a new inground roundabout that can be accessed by children with limited mobility and some wheelchairs. The old bark pit has been removed and a new rubber safety surface now links together all the play equipment.

Before the summer the Council will also be installing a half-pipe mini ramp for skateboarders, BMXers and scooter riders to enjoy.

Councillor John Belsey, Mid Sussex District Council Cabinet Member for Environment and Service Delivery said:

“These new playgrounds look fantastic and the variety of play equipment on offer means there’s something for children of all ages to enjoy.

“Opportunities for play are vitally important to every child’s development, so I’m delighted that we have been able to improve and upgrade the play equipment on offer in Burgess Hill and Turners Hill.

“We’ve created a safe and friendly environment for local children to play and I hope they create many happy memories of enjoying games with their friends in the fresh air.”
