Community led street art signals start of works to upgrade Wivelsfield Station

PR2289/NS/MJ - 10/08/2020

Following the recent public engagement, held in partnership by Mid Sussex District Council (MSDC) and West Sussex County Council (WSCC), on the Burgess Hill Place and Connectivity Programme two artists’ designed works will adorn the four walls of the station bridge.

Maria Amidu, a visual artist, and Lionel Stanhope, a trained sign writer have designed the murals in collaboration with the Worlds End Association and Manor Field Primary School.

The designs focus on the World’s End Neighbourhood, a very local area considered to be a quarter mile around the station and Watermill public house.  The art focuses on the community itself, the places they love and develops a motto for the neighbourhood. The designs will include the children’s ideas. Sussex and England cricketer Maurice Tate was identified as a local resident of importance and will also feature.

The artwork will complement existing artwork in the area and marks the start of wider improvements to the Wivelsfield Station area as part of the Burgess Hill Place and Connectivity (P&C) Programme. The P&C Programme includes schemes across Burgess Hill aimed at improving public spaces and increasing the use of sustainable forms of transport.

Councillor Judy Llewelyn-Burke, Deputy Leader at Mid Sussex District Council said, “I am delighted that work will now get underway at Wivelsfield station including this excellent art installation. The inclusion of suggestions from the Worlds End Association and drawings from the local Manor Field Primary School mark this work out as being a truly community-led project and one of which the entire local area can be particularly proud”.

The art installation will be followed by work to clean-up and repaint the underbridge and replace and upgrade the lighting and is part of a package of improvements to the Wivelsfield Station area that will provide better walking and cycling connections to the station and a lift to provide step free station access.
