Around 550,000 tonnes of paper are used every year in direct mail, door-to-door adverts and newspaper inserts. This equates to about 21 billion items. For many people such mailings are seen as a nuisance and a waste of paper.

Return to Sender
For addressed junk mail with a return address - cross out your address, write 'Unsolicited mail, return to sender' and pop it back in the post , unstamped. This should reduce any resends from the company.
Contact the Sender
Ask junk mailers to stop sending you mail, by mail or by phoning them and if need be quoting the Data Protection Act 1998. This is time consuming but companies cannot ignore it.
Fax Preference Service
The Fax Preference Service (FPS) is a central opt out register whereby corporate subscribers can register their wish not to receive unsolicited sales and marketing faxes. Under Government legislation introduced on 1 May 1999 it is unlawful to send an individual an unsolicited sales and marketing fax without prior permission.
