New Market Town Study

The New Settlement Study was commissioned in April 2010 by Mid Sussex District Council, Horsham District Council and Crawley Borough Council.

Its function was to provide an evidence base for one of the options being considered to meet the very high housing targets in the South East Plan.

Since that time, the new Coalition Government has announced its intention to abolish the South East Plan. Mid Sussex District Council has started work on a Local Housing Assessment, and early indications are that the housing requirement is likely to be much lower than the South East Plan targets.

Moreover, the New Settlement Study demonstrates that there are significant environmental and structural constraints in the area considered, and that the infrastructure requirements of a new settlement would be prohibitively expensive.

It is therefore considered that a new settlement would not be needed.

The Study is therefore published for information purposes only, to add to the substantial evidence base on development options in the area. Other options investigated can be seen on the development options webpage.

This evidence will inform the Councils' emerging plans, and any options to be taken forward will be the subject of full consultation.
