Dog Breeding

Anyone who breeds dogs as a business or produces, for sale, 5 or more litters of puppies per year needs to be licensed under the Breeding of Dogs Act 1973 (as amended by Breeding and Sale of Dogs (welfare) Act 1999).

How do I apply?

Apply Online

Paper Application

If you do not have a credit/debit card please print and complete the form below. Post to the Licensing Team, enclosing a cheque (made payable to Mid Sussex District Council).

On receipt of an application, the information provided will be assessed, and if satisfied a Licensing Officer and Vet will arrange an inspection and prepare a report on the premises and applicant.

A licence has conditions imposed which restrict the number of litters that each bitch can have, the age at which bitches can be used for breeding, and also specifies that a record of all births and sales must be kept.

A Dog breeding licence is valid for 1 year from the day on which it comes into force.
