food waste digester
Where do you put your Food Waste?

About one third of what we throw away is food waste. If this goes to landfill it produces methane as it breaks down. Methane is a gas that contributes more to global warming than Carbon Dioxide.

You can dispose of your food waste at home with a Food Waste Digester.

There are two main types of Food Waste Digester: -

  • The Green Cone
  • The Green Johanna

For full details of Green Cone & Green Johanna go to Green Cone Limited website or Call 0800 052 0462 for any queries and sales within West Sussex.

In Mid Sussex many properties have a very clay soil. Where this is the case a Green Johanna may work better. Alternately you could put a green cone into a raised bed to aid with drainage.

GREEN CONE

Green Cone is an unique and environmentally-friendly solution for managing household food waste. The unit accepts all cooked and uncooked food waste including vegetable scraps, meat, fish, bones, dairy products and other surplus organic kitchen material, reducing the contents to its natural components of water and CO2.

Designed to sit in a sunny position in a well drained garden, a Green Cone is suitable for use by an average family of four people. The unit's digestion chamber may need emptying every few years.

The double-walled solar cone creates a heat trap of circulating air, encouraging the growth of harmless bacteria and helping insulate the decaying matter in winter. A below ground digestion chamber means worms and natural soil organisms can migrate freely in an out of the basket ensuring odourless processing.

A Green Cone will:

  • Take ALL food waste, cooked and uncooked
  • Need a sunny position with good drainage
  • Work in a raised bed if there is clay
  • Need a hole dug 60cm wide, 42cm deep
  • Reduce your carbon footprint

A Green Cone will not:

  • Work in clay soil, in the shade or with poor drainage
  • Take garden waste
  • Produce compost
  • Attract vermin (when installed correctly)

GREEN JOHANNA

Green Johanna is an environmentally friendly solution for producing rich compost from household food waste mixed together with organic garden material. The unit accepts all cooked and uncooked food waste including vegetable scraps, meat, fish, bones, dairy products and organic garden waste such as plants, leaves and grass cuttings.

Designed to sit in a shady position in the garden, the Green Johanna's unique ventilation system enables the contents to reach significantly higher temperatures than traditional garden composters, breaking down waste faster.

Suitable for use all year round, the product is supplied with an optional winter jacket for use only if the ambient temperature falls below 5 degrees centigrade for long periods. A stirring stick for extracting compost from the base of the unit is also supplied.

If you have a family of 6 more or have clay soil but do not produce garden waste you can still use a Green Johanna by substituting paper for garden waste.

A Green Johanna will:

  • Accept ALL cooked and uncooked food waste
  • Take compostable garden waste
  • Require a shady position in the garden
  • Produce a rich compost
  • Be easy to set-up and requires only occasional mixing
  • Be ideal if you have clay soil or a high water table
  • Reduce your carbon footprint

A Green Johanna will not:

Attract vermin (when installed correctly).
