Councillor Michael Sullivan, a District Councillor for Franklands Ward in Burgess Hill, has died at the age of 53, following a long battle with diabetes.
Michael John Sullivan moved to Burgess Hill in 1959, at the age of six. He was educated at Hurstpierpoint College, and at Oxford University, where he studied Philosophy, Politics and Economics, and he went on to a career as an international bank executive.
Having retired, in 1999 Michael Sullivan was elected as a Conservative on both Mid Sussex District Council and Burgess Hill Town Council, continuing to serve on both councils for the next eight years.
During his time at Mid Sussex District Council, he served on numerous committees and panels, including the Development and Transport Committee, Better Environment Advisory Group, Standards Committee and South Area Planning Committee.
Mr Sullivan was the Council's representative to Age Concern Burgess Hill, and was for seven years a member of the Burgess Hill Green Crescent Steering Group.
Mr Sullivan had decided not to stand as a Councillor at the next election due to ill health.
Councillor Patrick Shanahan, Leader of Mid Sussex District Council, and Conservative group leader said: 'Michael was a valued friend and trusted colleague, whom it was my privilege to know. His contribution to Burgess Hill and to the District as a whole will be much missed.'
Councillor Graham Knight, Liberal Democrat group leader said: 'Michael was someone who took his responsibilities as both a District and a Town Councillor very seriously. I extend my sympathies to his mother, and to his family, friends and colleagues.'
Councillor Paddy Henry, Labour group leader said: 'It is with great regret that I learned of the death of Michael Sullivan. Those of us who had the opportunity of working with him were fortunate to have done so.'
