Housing Options for Older People
There is a good choice of affordable rented sheltered housing for older people in Mid Sussex ranging from self contained studio flats to 2 bed flats for couples that need separate bedrooms because of health reasons. Each scheme will have a designated Scheme Manager to provide support to residents, although not all Scheme Managers 'live in'. A 24hr alarm system provides assistance in emergencies for when the Scheme Manager is off duty.
In addition, there are currently 4 Extra Care Schemes in Mid Sussex located in Burgess Hill, Lindfield and East Grinstead. Home Care staff are available 24 hours a day at Extra Care Schemes to provide on-site personal care as assessed by Adult Services at West Sussex County Council. The aim is to provide an independent home for life so that residents don't have to move into residential care.
A full list of sheltered and Extra Care schemes with details of facilities is available from the Common Housing Register Team at Downland Housing Association, the Council's Supported Housing Enabling Officer or by clicking here to view the Sheltered Schemes by Area. There are also a range of properties for older people to buy in Mid Sussex. Please contact the individual management company for up to date details of prices.
If you would like to remain in your current home but it is no longer physically suitable for your needs, Anchor Staying Put can advise you on home improvement issues. Contact them on tel: 01444 415475, email: stayingput.midsussex@anchor.org.uk or download their leaflet.
In addition, the Council's The Housing Standards Team may be able to assist you with a Home Renovation Loan, Minor Works Grant or Disabled Facilities Grant. (tel: 01444 477300)
Your Home... Your Choice
A new service has been launched in May 2010 "Your Home Your Choice". This is provided by West Sussex Age UK's (Previously Age Concern) Mid Sussex Outreach team which aims to provide older people with the advice and support they need when they are considering their housing options. The service can advise on options to stay, perhaps with the addition of aids and adaptations to their present home or alternatively what choices there may be to move to somewhere smaller, more accessible and easier to manage both physically and financially. If the decision is to make a move then the service can provide advice and help with how to sort out all the practical tasks involved with moving to a new home. The service can help any older person in Mid Sussex whether you are a housing association or private tenant or if you own your own home. Have a look at the leaflet and contact Age.UK if you would like to arrange help from the service.
If you need support to help you manage the day to day running of your home, there are outreach services available.
The Council's Community and Living Team has compiled a comprehensive Community Connections Directory of services available for Older People.
Mid Sussex Networks for Older People is an independent network of voluntary and community organisations which support older people across the Mid Sussex District. Working in partnership with other groups it aims to encourage wider community participation and develop the range of voluntary services for older people in Mid Sussex.
Mid Sussex District Council formally adopted an Older Persons' Housing Strategy. This outlines how we plan to meet the housing needs of older people, now and in the future.
