LATEST NEWS: JULY 2010 SOUTH EAST PLAN REVOKED
On 6th July 2010, the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government revoked the Regional Spatial Strategies with immediate effect. The South East Plan will therefore no longer form part of the Development Plan for Mid Sussex.
The South East Plan will be legally abolished through legislation in the "Localism Bill" later in 2010. Planning decisions will now have regard to the saved policies of the adopted Local Plan and other DPDs and SPDs (such as the Small Scale Housing Allocations Document) within the Local Development Framework, but not the South East Plan.
The revocation of the South East Plan removes the Regional housing target of 17,100 homes for Mid Sussex. Interim guidance from the Secretary of State advises that Local Planning authorities will now be responsible for establishing the right level of housing provision for their area. However, Councils should use reliable information and evidence to justify their new housing ambitions and policies which must be defended during LDF examination. Mid Sussex District Council has not yet determined its local housing ambition, which will be the subject of further work and consultation over 2010.
LATEST NEWS: JUNE 2010 WORK HALTED ON CORE STRATEGY
At Council on 16th June 2010, a decision was taken to stop work on the Core Strategy. This is due to the changes the new Government is proposing to the planning system, in particular, the cancellation of the South East Plan (the Regional Spatial Strategy) as the Core Strategy relies on it for many of its policies and it includes the district's housing targets.

More information can be found in the officer's report taken to Better Environment on 22nd June 2010.
WHAT IS THE CORE STRATEGY?
The Core Strategy is a key document in the Mid Sussex Local Development Framework. All subsequent planning documents need to conform with the Core Strategy, which sets out:
- The vision for Mid Sussex to 2026
- Core policies on general issues including the environment, settlement pattern, affordable housing, gypsies and travellers, town centres, shopping, employment, rural issues, community facilities, infrastructure and energy
- Housing strategy and broad locations for development

PRE-SUBMISSION DOCUMENT (January 2008)
The 'Pre-Submission' Core Strategy Document was published for consultation February/March 2008. It included a number of options for the location of new development and a range of other potential policies relating to the location and nature of future development in Mid Sussex. The publication of this document gave everyone the opportunity to contribute to shaping the future of the District over the plan period to 2026.
