GARDEN WASTE COLLECTION SERVICE

A service for Mid Sussex residents through which garden waste can be collected from the kerbside.

PLEASE NOTE THERE IS CURRENTLY A WAITING LIST FOR THE GARDEN WASTE SERVICE.

We are undergoing a period of consolidation for the Garden Waste Collection Service and currently have a waiting list. If you wish to join the waiting list please complete an application form (follow the link to the right) and we will add your name to the list. When we are able to offer you the service we will get in touch to check that the service is still required. No payments will be taken from your account whilst you are on the waiting list.

Annual subscription charges are as follows:

  •   Wheeled bin £55 per year
  • 26 Garden Sacks £27.50 per year
  • 52 Garden Sacks £55 per year

This service  costs just over £1 a week, representing good value for money. Your subscription saves many individual car/van journeys to the recycling point. Add to this that you are making a real contribution to looking after the environment and Mid Sussex's consistent, over-all re-cycling rate of 47%. The Kerbside Garden Waste Collection service ensures this waste stream is disposed of sustainably by diverting it from landfill to a compost facility.

How does the service work?

  • The Council will provide a 240 litre green lidded wheeled bin for your garden waste.
  • If you do not have room for, or necessity of, a wheeled bin the Council will provide either 26 or 52 biodegradable paper sacks for your garden waste on an annual subscription. (Properties can have a wheeled bin OR sacks but not both. If the property has room for a bin then a bin subscription should be taken out).
  • The bin will be emptied / sacks will be collected fortnightly from the edge of your property, at the point nearest the highway(not necessarily on the same day as the household waste and recycling is collected).
  • A maximum of 5 sacks can be put out for each collection with a maximum weight of 15kgs per sack.
  • If you subscribe to the sack service you will automatically be re-delivered sacks the following year unless you cancel your subscription. If you put out any remaining sacks for collection after you have cancelled your subscription they will not be collected.
  • If you have not used all your sacks you will need to renew your subscription for continuing collections. If you have not used all your sacks and do not continue the annual subscription collections will cease and you will need to dispose of the remaining filled sacks at a local Household Waste Recycling Site. £27.50 pays for up to 26 sacks / 26 visits  & £55 pays for 52 sacks / up to 26 visits (fortnightly collection).
  • Only garden waste presented in a green lidded garden bin or Council supplied biodegradable sack will be collected.
  • All garden waste collected is composted at the facility operated by OLUS Environmental in Wineham.

How much does the service cost?

  • Wheeled bin - annual fee of £55 per bin. The subscription covers the cost of 26 collections. This works out just over £1 a week.
  • Garden sacks - annual sack delivery of 26 sacks for £27.50 or 52 sacks for £55 with a fortnightly collection. This works out at just over £1 per week.
  • Payment is made by annual Direct Debit, the first payment will be taken once your bin / sacks have been delivered. You will be notified of payment dates. Paying by Direct Debit is easy for residents and keeps the running costs of the service down; we can accept cheque payments in exceptional circumstances.
  • If you require additional sacks during the year you will need to register for an additional annual subscription for either 26 or 52 sacks. If you find this to be the case you may wish to consider subscribing to the garden bin collection service.

The service is available to residents across Mid Sussex. the only exception is where a properties landfill & recycling waste is collected by the Garwood vehicle, in these cases we are sorry, but  the garden waste vehicle is too large to access the road.

How do I apply for Garden Waste collection?

Once your information is entered on our system we will deliver your sacks or bin. An information pack including the date of your payment, a collection calendar and terms of condition of payment will be sent separately.

Garden Waste Service Questions & Answers (pdf 1620kb)     Please refer to this document for the answers to most commonly asked questions about the service.

I won't use 26 sacks in a year, or  fill a bin,  what should I do?

  • 26 garden sacks hold a relatively small amount of garden waste, you may wish to try a subscription and see how you get on.
  • You could consider a compost bin. A small bin will fit snugly in a corner of your garden and you can use it for some of your kitchen waste too (vegetable peeling, egg shell etc). WSCC sell compost bins at subsidised rates, starting at £17. For Better Tomorrows
  • You could share a subscription of 26 bags with a neighbour using 13 sacks each. The sacks would need to be placed at the one address that subscribes to the service for collection, as this is the address the crew will have on their collection sheets.
  • Neighbours with small gardens can share a bin and the cost! The bin will be collected from the applicants address only.
  • Take your garden waste to the local Household Waste recycling Sites at Burgess Hill or East Grinstead. If you are unable to do this yourself, could you find a relative, friend, or neighbour who could make the trip for you?

CHANGES TO COLLECTIONS OVER CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR FROM 2011

In common with many local authorities, collections will no longer be made over the two weeks containing the Christmas / New Year Bank Holidays, starting Christmas 2011. Collections are very light over this period. Collections will be reduced from 26 to 25 per year, for all subscribers.

Collections over the Christmas period 2010 will remain in place.
