West Sussex County Council is responsible for
- Cutting and maintaining grass verges in towns and other urban areas. This is usually the area between the road and footpath.
- In the countryside, or where there are no pavements, WSCC maintain the verges so that pedestrians don't have to walk in the road (where avoidable).
- As far as safety allows, WSCC aim to preserve verges as havens for rare flowers and wildlife.
