The Council's housing register is run by the Homemove team at Clarion Housing.

Sussex Homemove is for people looking for social housing, for the first time and for existing tenants wanting to move home.

On the Homemove website you can:

  • View Adverts for available properties: Adverts will have information that will make it easier to make an informed choice on what to bid on. Adverts can have multiple property pictures and will show the properties location on google maps.
  • Property Alerts: You can set up an email alert that will be sent to you when a property that meets your criteria becomes available.
  • Document Upload: The document uploader allows you to quickly submit evidence towards your application.

Please take a look at our Social housing FAQs for more information.

How housing allocation works

Our Housing Allocation Scheme sets out how applicants on the housing register are selected for accommodation. The scheme is intended to be open and transparent. Hard copies are available on request.

Changes to the Housing Allocation Scheme as of 1st August 2019

The main changes that came into force from 1st August 2019 are as follows:

Changes to qualification criteria to join the housing register

The revised Scheme allows applicants who are Clarion Housing tenants living in Mid Sussex to be allowed to join our housing register. Clarion Housing tenants were previously disqualified from joining our housing register

Applicants who provide false information or withhold relevant information will be disqualified from joining our housing register for a period of 24 months. There is no time limit in the current Scheme.

Bidding

Homeless applicants - special rules

Bids from homeless applicants where we have a duty to ensure they have accommodation available to them (under s.193 of the Housing Act 1996), subject to some exceptions, will be given priority over bids from other applicants in their band.

Homeless applicants we owe the main housing duty (under s.193 of the Housing Act 1996) are currently entitled to 12 weeks free bidding. The revised Scheme provides that these applicants will no longer be entitled to 12 weeks free bidding; they will be required to accept the first suitable offer.

Homeless applicants owed the Relief Duty (under s.189B of the Housing Act 1996, as amended by the Homelessness Reduction Act 2017) are currently entitled to 12 weeks free bidding. The revised Scheme provides these applicants will no longer be entitled to 12 weeks free bidding; they will be required to accept the first suitable offer.

Banding

Homeless applicants owed the Relief Duty (under s.189B of the Housing Act 1996, as amended by the Homelessness Reduction Act 2017) and in priority need or likely be in priority need (as defined by the Housing Act 1996) will be placed in Band C whilst the Relief Duty is owed.

Direct Allocation

The revised Scheme allows in exceptional cases some homes to be allocated through Direct Allocation.

Extra Care Housing Schemes

Currently vacancies are allocated by a Multi-Agency Panel. The revised Scheme allows direct lettings to best meet the housing care needs of frail older people.
