Council community grants total £209,818

PR2162/EC/MF - 06/04/2018

Mid Sussex District Council has awarded more than £200,000 in grant funding to local community groups and voluntary organisations.

The Mid Sussex District Council Cabinet Grants Panel met on 14 March to discuss the grant funding allocations and a total of £209,818 has been awarded to 20 successful applicants.

East Grinstead Sports Club has been granted three awards totalling £143,870 to improve leisure facilities at the centre. A registered charity, East Grinstead Sports Club provides a range of sports facilities for the local community including hockey, cricket, netball, junior football, badminton, squash, tennis, table tennis, lacrosse, basketball and volleyball.

The sports club is the home of twenty local sports clubs and around 300,000 people use the facilities each year. The grant funding will enable them to upgrade the gym changing rooms, install outdoor lighting and CCTV, make improvements to reception, refurbish the bar area, expand the car park, install practice nets and improve the drainage of the cricket pitch.

Cuckfield Parish Council was granted £3,000 for a special commemorative bench. The village cemetery has an unmarked area where stillborn babies delivered at the old Cuckfield Hospital were laid to rest. A feathered bench designed by Sussex sculptor Christian Funnell will provide grieving parents with a focal point when they visit the cemetery.

Mid Sussex Active has been awarded £2,100 for their new ‘Girls Get Active’ programme. Nationally and locally there is a significant decrease in regular physical activity amongst girls of secondary school age. The Girls Get Active programme will enable 240 young girls who are at risk of becoming disengaged with exercise to take part in activities in an informal and fun environment.

National charity Fixers has been awarded £4,972 to deliver a project that will help to tackle mental health issues in Mid Sussex. In-depth studies show there is a lack of opportunities for young people from marginalised and vulnerable groups to take part in social action and tackle issues. Fixers will appoint a Young People’s Coordinator to talk with local children and teenagers about their personal experiences and work with them to identify issues and give them a voice.

“In Mid Sussex we are fortunate to have so many local people who are willing to give up their time to support those in need and organise fantastic activities for local people to enjoy,” said Councillor Jonathan Ash-Edwards, Cabinet Member for Resources and Economic Growth. “They do tremendous work for the local community and I’m proud that we’re able to support their work with our latest allocation of grant funding.

“It was great to see so many applications for projects that will benefit young people and help local people to be more active. Regular exercise has so many benefits and can make a real difference to overall health and wellbeing. “The investment at East Grinstead Sports Club is significant and will be vitally important to the long-term success of the venue. However, it was just as pleasing to award funding to smaller organisations like Haywards Heath Cricket Club, Hurstpierpoint Gymnastics Club and for new playground equipment in Poynings because they play such an important role in bringing the local community together.”
