Mid Sussex District Council wants to remind residents of the potential flooding that could take place this winter following heavy rain or snowfall.

The South East has experienced heavy snowfall during the winter months for the past few years and weather forecasters are warning that residents could experience more of the same this year.

Mid Sussex District Council is helping residents to protect their property against any potential flooding that results from thawing snow or heavy rainfall by offering them the opportunity to purchase Gel Floodbags at a special rate of £30 (box of 5) or £55 (box of 10). The Gel Floodbags are easier to handle than traditional sandbags and will last for many years. More information can be found at www.midsussex.gov.uk/flood or by calling 01444 477408.

Following heavy rain or snow, it is possible to have localised flooding. Residents can minimise the risk of flooding by checking their home’s drainage systems are not blocked or overflowing. Residents can also check that guttering and watercourses are cleared of leaves and other items.

Rainfall and river levels are monitored 24 hours a day by the Environment Agency. The Flood Line Service (0845 988 1188) gives recorded flood warning information, request flood alerts or allows residents to get general advice.

“We’ve had heavy snow at some point during the winter for the past few years so it is sensible to prepare for a similar situation this year,” said Cllr Moore, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Sustainability. “It is important to learn from our past experiences and we know that melting snow has the potential to cause flooding, so we are encouraging residents to be prepared for this eventuality. Of course, the likelihood of flooding depends largely on how quickly the snow thaws, but we can all help to reduce the potential impacts by keeping drains clear, monitoring flood warnings and have gel bags to hand.”
