Both new bins

Mid Sussex District Council has an Alternate Weekly Collection Service for Refuse and Recycling.

Since the introduction of the new service in Autumn 2007 we have seen a significant rise in the amount of material we are recycling and a reduction in what we are sending to landfill.

We now recycle 46% of the waste we make in Mid Sussex.

This is fantastic news and we would like to thank residents for doing such a good job with their recycling.

Outline details of how the service works are shown below, and further details and  answers to your questions can be found by looking at the the pages on the left and the links on the right.

HOW THE REFUSE and RECYCLING SERVICE WORKS

Every household has two wheeled bins.
One bin will be grey with a blue lid – for recycling
One bin will be grey with a grey lid – for refuse

We collect your bins on alternate weeks: Recycling bin one week and your Refuse bin the next week.

A leaflet detailing how the service works is available to download  from downloads / links section to the right or by contacting the Refuse and  Recycling Team on 01444 477440 or emailing wastematters@midsussex.gov.uk

When will my collections be made?

Collection Calendars are available to download at Collection Day Information or by contacting the Refuse and Recycling Team. Collections will take place on Bank Holidays, except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day. Please check your calendar for day changes over the Christmas period.

Bins need to be available for collection from 7am.

What can I put in my bins?

Recycling bin:

  • Plastic bottles (only bottles - no cartons/ punnets/ yoghurt pots etc)
  • Paper and  cardboard
  • Food and drink cans
  • Glass bottles and  jars
  • Cartons
  • Foil and  foil containers

Please ignore the triangular recycling sign on items, although your item maybe recyclable, in Mid Sussex we can only take the items listed above.

The items that we find in recycling bins that cause us most problems that we are not able to recycle are:

  • Rubbish and food
  • Other plastic containers (including plastic bags).
  • Any other glass and crockery

Please put these items in your Grey Lidded Landfill Bin.

If you are unsure what you can recycle please look at our Refuse and Recycling Service Leaflet (PDF 816kbs) or contact the Refuse and Recycling Team.

All material for recycling should be clean, dry and loose (not in bags)

Refuse bin:

  • Anything else EXCEPT clinical waste, garden waste, electrical goods or large items of household waste

A leaflet explaining what you can put in your bins is available for download in the download / links section to the right.

Chargeable collections of bulky household waste are available.

Local Bring Sites and Household Waste Recycling Sites (Civic Amenity Sites) are also available.

Garden Waste

The 1999 EU Landfill Directive requires that the  UK reduces the amount of biodegradable waste going to landfill by 75% o 1995 level by 2010 and 35% b 2020.  Garden waste is organic and therefore biodegradable and decays in landfill sites to produce methane a potent greenhouse gas which is contributing to climate change. We therefore do not accept garden waste in landfill bins but instead encourage people to compost at home or to subscribe to our Garden Waste collection Service (follow the Garden Waste Service link on the left).

ICY AREAS

Over the winter there may be areas that are inaccessible to our 26 tonne freighters due to icy conditions.

The decision on whether it is safe for a freighter to access a specific location/street  has to be determined locally by the driver of that vehicle, taking into account the prevailing driving and weather conditions at that time and the physical nature of the area that has to be negotiated.

These locations will be recorded by crews and where there is an ongoing problem it will be noted and the Customer Contact Centre will be notified. In these instances please leave bins out for collection and vehicles will return when it is deemed safe to do so. PLEASE LEAVE YOUR BINS OUT.

If you need to know more, or have any questions please contact us.
