From 1 April 2011 the South Downs National Park Authority (SDNPA) has been responsible for all town planning matters in the South Downs National Park area. The SDNPA deals with about 4,000 planning applications a year, making it one of the largest planning authorities in the country.
How do I find out if I live within the South Downs National Park?
Please use the Do I live in the National Park? facility on our website, where you will be able to insert your postcode, and find out if your property, or application site, lies within the boundary of the South Downs National Park.
Where do I submit my planning applications
The SDNPA have made arrangements with a number of local district councils to provide the SDNPA with a processing service for most planning applications under the terms of an agency agreement. Mid Sussex District Council is a partner in this agency agreement. The SDNPA will determine major applications, and retains overall policy control.
If you live in the Mid Sussex District Council area, but within the National Park boundary, you should continue to submit your planning applications to Mid Sussex District Council in the normal way. If you submit your application through the Planning Portal, this will be routed to Mid Sussex District Council who will deal with it on behalf of the SDNPA.
What happens next?
If your application is processed by Mid Sussex District Council, it will be decided by the district council planning committee, or planning officer, in accordance with local provisions for officer delegation. All communications regarding a planning application (letters, emails, phone calls) should be directed to Mid Sussex District Council, not the SDNPA.
If the application is deemed 'significant' by the SDNPA then the application will be determined by a case officer at the SDNPA. The SDNPA have produced 'Guidelines on Significance'. The SDNPA also produce a list of significant applications that are being dealt with by officers at the SDNPA.
How can I view applications that have been submitted to the South Downs National Park?
From 1 April 2012, new planning applications received for properties within the South Downs National Park will only appear on the national park planning system and website. Further information including how to view these planning applications, please use the South Downs National Park Planning Register.
For applications received between 1 April 2011 and 31 March 2012 in the national park area, you must use the Mid Sussex District Council Planning Register.
Downloadable planning application forms
The SDNPA encourages all applicants to apply electronically using the Planning Portal. If you cannot submit your application electronically, we have a dedicated set of downloadable planning applications forms that can be printed off and completed for submission to Mid Sussex District Council.
