Mid Sussex District Council has been awarded the South East Charter for Elected Member Development.

South East Employers awarded the District Council with Charter status on 25 October 2010 following its successful assessment against the Charter Standard. This is a national standard similar to Investors in People but awarded for commitment to Elected Member learning and development.

This national Charter recognises the Council's commitment and performance in providing effective and comprehensive induction, development and support to our 54 Members to enable them to successfully fulfil their varied and challenging roles as elected Councillors for the District.

The benefits for the community are good quality effective local governance, engagement in local democracy being encouraged and Councillors having increased knowledge and skills to enable them to better represent and assist residents in their wards.

Councillors have the opportunity to shape the development programme to meet their needs. Councillors' feedback and the responses to their training needs analysis are key considerations in setting the development opportunities. A new induction programme is planned for 2011 to help new Councillors acquire the knowledge and skills needed to carry out their duties more speedily.
